These are a couple of head shots I did for Arch Creative Group, a web design firm in Boston. The one below is the owner of the company and the one above is one of his clients, a savvy investment banker.
These days, if you don’t look professional, you’re not viewed as a professional. That doesn’t just mean wearing a suit to the office anymore, it means having an image that looks like it wasn’t created by a kindergartner. A website is like the front cover of that image, it needs to have good graphics, photos, etc. Being simple and easy to navigate also helps.
If there’s too much chaos on a site that I click to, I often click off instantly… I’m not hanging around long enough to see that maybe this site has exactly what I’m looking for. Same thing with photos and graphics, if a site doesn’t have good ones, I can’t respect that company. We’re so influenced visually as a culture and getting good photography is such a simple thing to do nowadays that I don’t think there is any excuse for not having photos with some impact.
For the past couple of months I’ve been working with Studio Dunn to help them launch their first ever line of hand-crafted, all natural wood furniture. I’ve had to keep a lid on these images for a while until they had a chance to finish up a few more things on the business side, and I admit, it was a bit difficult. Most of these images were taken in February and March and as you can see, some are outdoors, and it was freezing and almost always around sunrise. So after all I went through to get these shots, I wanted to show them off a bit.
The concept was to provide each piece of furniture with a “glamour shot” and standard product shots. With the pieces being made of natural materials (wood), we decided why not set them up in natural environments. Sure beats those boring shots with the furniture indoors somewhere. These pieces also have a very elegant, natural design and smooth curves… it seemed like a no-brainer to bring them into nature.
So here’s a few of the final images as they’ll appear on catalog cards, a few product shots, some of my favorites that ended up on the cutting room floor, and some behind-the-scenes shots.
The catalog cards, and everything else for that matter, were designed by Lizzy Green. You can see her work here. Lots of great stuff.
Part of a photographer’s job is to keep his/her portfolio fresh. The portfolio is incredibly dynamic and should almost feel alive. If it stays the same for too long people become uninterested. So when business is slow or I’m in a creative funk, it’s a good time to create some new images, some mock advertisements, and stretch my limits as a creative photographer by leaving my comfort zone.
I love the outdoors, and I’ve always liked photographing people. So really, my dream job would be working for clients who sell outdoor equipment, apparel, whatever. I’ve been taking and creating jobs lately that focus on this type of photography. In this business, in order to get paid for something, you better have done it before… and well. So setting up shots that you eventually hope to get paid to take with friends, family, models… strangers? … whoever will pose, is a good way to start getting the jobs you want. So that’s what I’ve done. Enjoy.
This is a series of photographs I shot at a house party in Brooklyn, New York featuring Rhode Island’s own The Devil, My Pocket as one of the fantastic musical guests. It’s a very photojournalistic style of photography that I’ve been embracing lately, and for whatever reason I feel like it works best with a really grainy, black and white tone. All these images were shot wide open (f/1.4 for the camera nerds) and intentionally have a very shallow depth of field (not a lot of stuff in focus). I think it speaks to the mood of the night, and hopefully these images tell you a story, because they certainly tell me one. To hear some music from The Devil, My Pocket you should click here. Enjoy!
About 2 months ago gsp studios did a shoot with Grammy-nominated R&B singer Blu Cantrell. See previous posts here and here. Well, below is a selection of images from that day and the long awaited FULL behind the scenes video of how and where the shoot went down. There was a lot of info edited off the video for time, so there might be yet another post with additional “deleted scenes”. But for now this should satisfy everyone’s curiosity. Thanks for checking it out!
Think February is a horrible time for a wedding in New England? Well… it usually is. If it was this week, it would have been awful.
But Kate and Bryan got lucky with the 20th of this month. Amazing day. I think it hit 50 degrees in Boston and it was brilliantly sunny all afternoon.
Working downtown has its ups and downs, but overall I love it. There are extreme areas of sunlight and shadow that can make getting accurate exposures throughout the range a little difficult, but that’s why you should hire me, right? I got it done. And to me, shots in the city beat shots on the beach any day of week. Well, mostly. At least in the winter.
On a more personal note, Kate and Bryan are an amazing couple and were a pleasure to work with. Weddings are unfortunate in that I only get to work with these great, friendly people once. But, a good time was had by all so I thought I’d share a few highlights from the last beautiful day New England has seen in about a week. Enjoy!
This week I had the pleasure of working again with Grammy-nominated R&B singer Blu Cantrell. This time we hit up a few lounges in Providence to grab some lifestyle images. First stop was 3 Steeple Street in downtown Providence, followed by NYLO Hotels.
These images will more than likely be used on her website and for her press pack, showing a more natural, relaxed side.
Unfortunately I can’t release the actual photos for a little while, until she’s had the chance to use them herself. I am however including a few images of the locations where we shot.
I also had Rajah Samaroo of RI Video Production on hand to take some amazing behind-the-scenes video. This is only part of that video… an abridged version, or teaser, if you will.
The full video including interviews and commentary by me will be up and running in a few weeks once the editing process is complete. Enjoy!
I’m happy to announce that gsp studios is teaming up with Infinity Weddings to bring high quality HD wedding videography to its clients.
The above video is a highlight reel from Infinity Weddings by Rajah Samaroo. Videography packages start at $1500, but starting today, when you book one together with a gsp studios photography package, you save 5%.
